Synauta and GHD partner to optimize water reuse plants in California

Synauta, the water industry’s first choice to optimize reverse osmosis, is excited to announce a partnership with global professional services company GHD to optimize multiple water reuse plants in California.

Via a USBR Grant, the companies are currently reviewing different reverse osmosis water reuse plants with the intent to proceed with at least two long-term trials using RO Chemical Saver’s machine learning recommendations for operators to optimize RO cleaning and replacement of membranes.

“The use of machine learning enables agencies to do more with less and make timely critical decisions to ensure a safe and reliable water supply for the communities they serve,” says Mark Donovan, North America Water Treatment and Desalination Lead, GHD.

“By using algorithms to learn from previous clean and change patterns and predict the future evolution of fouling indicators – plant operators are empowered to efficiently monitor the state of the system and anticipate possible deviations reducing the impacts of downtimes at plants.”

Mike Dixon, CEO, Synauta shares, “When a 94-year-old company can partner with a 4-year-old company it shows the water industry is capable of combining established engineering knowhow with the latest technologies to benefit water treatment operations overall.”

The plants being prepared for trials have tertiary treated municipal wastewater or brackish well water, with capacities between 18,000 to 72,000 m3/day (4 to 16 MGD).

It’s not the first time the two companies have worked together. In 2019, as part of a Sustainable Development Technologies Canada (SDTC) project, GHD was retained by Synauta to develop an Environmental Benefits Quantification Report, which showed the global desalination industry could save up to 12M tonnes of CO2e every year by optimizing reverse osmosis.

You can catch Mark Donovan from GHD and Miller Truby, Technical Sales Associate from Synauta at the 37th Annual WateReuse Symposium in San Antonio, Texas this week from this Sunday 5 March.
